How to Check iCloud Lock Status

Buying a used Apple device without checking the iCloud Activation Lock status can be an expensive mistake. If a device has Activation Lock enabled, it requires the previous owner's Apple ID and password to unlock it, rendering it completely useless if you don't have that information.

Warning: Apple no longer hosts a public Activation Lock checker tool on its website. Do NOT trust paid online services that claim they can "bypass" or "remove" the iCloud activation lock—these are almost always scams.

Method 1: Checking in Person (The Best Way)

If you are buying the phone locally (e.g., from Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or a friend), the most reliable method is to turn on the device and perform a test.

  1. Turn on the device: If you see a "Hello" screen, the device might be wiped, but it still might be locked.
  2. Go through the setup: Choose a language, region, and connect to Wi-Fi.
  3. Wait for Activation: The device will contact Apple's servers.
    • If it moves on to "Data & Privacy," the device is unlocked and ready to use.
    • If it stops at a screen saying "Activation Lock" or "iPhone Locked to Owner", the device is locked. Ask the seller to enter their Apple ID to bypass it and erase the device, or do not buy it.

Method 2: Asking the Seller for Proof

If you are buying online from eBay or Swappa, you cannot physically hold the phone before purchasing. In this case:

  • Ask the seller to send you a video of the device going past the Wi-Fi activation screen to the Home Screen.
  • Require them to show that there is no Apple ID listed under Settings > [Your Name].
  • Use trusted platforms with buyer protection (like eBay or Swappa) that guarantee refunds if the item arrives iCloud-locked.

Method 3: Third-Party IMEI Checkers

Several free online IMEI checking tools can indicate whether "Find My iPhone" (FMI) is ON or OFF. While we encourage caution as these tools rely on unofficial APIs, they can be a helpful indicator.

  • Obtain the device's IMEI or Serial Number from the seller.
  • Enter it into our iCloud Activation Lock Checker tool or similar reputable checking sites.
  • If "Find My" is marked as ON, the Activation Lock is active. The seller must turn it off.
